Best Badge Strategy for Google Cloud Arcade

A data-driven approach to badge completion that maximizes points while minimizing time investment.

The ROI Mindset

Most Arcade participants make a critical mistake: they complete badges randomly or based on what sounds interesting. While curiosity-driven learning is valuable, it's not the path to maximum points. The strategic approach uses ROI — Return on Investment — where the "investment" is your time and the "return" is points earned.

ROI in the Arcade context means: points earned per minute of effort. A badge that awards 15 points but takes 2 hours is worse ROI than a badge that awards 10 points in 30 minutes. This simple metric should guide all your decisions.

Our ArcadePoints Calc Calculator automatically ranks unearned badges by ROI, so you never have to calculate this manually. But understanding the principles behind the ranking helps you make better decisions.

Badge Priority Matrix

We categorize badges into four priority levels based on their ROI score:

Priority 1 — Do First

Badges: Weekly Trivia (all available), Beginner Skill Badges, Level 1 Game Badges

2-10 points in 5-30 minutes. Highest ROI in the program. These are your bread and butter.

Priority 2 — Core Strategy

Badges: Intermediate Skill Badges (10-15 pts), Level 2 Game Badges (10 pts), Quick Labs (5 pts)

Solid 10-15 points in 30-60 minutes. These form the bulk of your point accumulation. Complete 1-2 daily.

Priority 3 — When Available

Badges: Advanced Skill Badges (20 pts), Level 3 Game Challenges (15 pts), Harder Labs

Good absolute points but require more time and cloud knowledge. Attempt after clearing Priority 1 and 2.

Priority 4 — Low Priority

Badges: Full Courses (25-30 pts), Multi-hour Labs, Very Advanced Challenges

Only pursue if you genuinely need the learning or have exhausted all other options. Time is better spent on multiple smaller badges.

The Sequential Strategy

Don't try to do everything at once. The most successful Arcade participants follow a sequential approach:

  1. Phase 1 (Days 1-3): Complete ALL available trivia badges. This gives you an immediate point floor and builds momentum.
  2. Phase 2 (Days 4-10): Blitz through beginner skill badges and Level 1 game badges. Aim for 3-4 per day. These are quick, straightforward, and reward-dense.
  3. Phase 3 (Days 11-20): Tackle intermediate skill badges one per day. Pair each with any new trivia releases that week for consistent daily gains.
  4. Phase 4 (Days 21+): Move to advanced badges and remaining game levels. By now, you've built cloud skills that make these more manageable.

This phased approach ensures you're always working on the highest-ROI badges available to you at your current skill level. Each phase builds the skills needed for the next.

Category-Specific Tips

Skill Badge Tips

  • Read the badge overview before starting — some badges share labs with others, saving time
  • Use GCP DECODE video solutions to speed through complex labs
  • Cloud Shell commands can be copy-pasted — keep a cheat sheet for common operations
  • Do related badges back-to-back (e.g., all networking badges) to benefit from context carryover

Trivia Badge Tips

  • Trivia badges release weekly — set a recurring calendar reminder
  • Most answers can be found in official Google Cloud documentation
  • You can retry trivia — don't stress about getting everything right first time
  • Complete trivia the day it releases to avoid forgetting

Game Level Tips

  • Level 1 games are basically guided tutorials — treat them as warmups
  • Level 3 challenges often combine skills from Level 1 and 2 — don't skip ahead
  • Certification Zone games are seasonal — check availability regularly
  • Base Camp badges are great for absolute beginners and offer quick points

Time Windows — When to Push Hard

Not all days are equal in the Arcade. Here are the key time windows to be aware of:

  • Season Start (first 2 weeks): All badges are available, motivation is high, and you're fresh. This is your highest-ROI period.
  • New Badge Releases: Google periodically adds new badges. Jump on these immediately — they're often beginner-friendly.
  • Mid-Season Checkpoint: Evaluate your progress against your target tier. Adjust strategy if needed.
  • Final Month: Urgency mode. Focus exclusively on highest-ROI remaining badges. Use our calculator to identify exactly what to prioritize.

Using ArcadePoints Calc for Strategy

Our Points Calculator automates badge strategy with these features:

  • ROI Ranking: Automatically sorts unearned badges by points-per-effort
  • Quick Wins: Highlights the 5 highest-value easy badges you haven't earned
  • 7-Day Plan: Generates a daily badge completion schedule
  • Tier Progress: Shows exactly how many points you need for your target tier
  • Category Breakdown: Visual charts showing where your points come from

FAQ

Which badges should I complete first?

Start with trivia (easiest), then beginner skill badges, then beginner games. This gives fastest initial point accumulation.

Are some badge categories better than others?

For time efficiency: trivia > skill badges > games > labs > courses. For total points: courses > skill badges > games > labs > trivia.

Should I complete courses for points?

Only if you need the knowledge. The time investment (4-8 hours) earns far more points when spent on multiple smaller badges.
