Trivia & Cert Zones Officially Retired
Why did Google retire Trivia, Certification Zones, and Sprints for the 2026 season? Read our comprehensive analysis on the naye point systems, legacy badges preservation, and student guidelines.
The Big Shift: Focus on Hands-on Learning
In previous seasons of the Google Cloud Arcade, participants could accumulate significant points by completing weekly Trivia badges, flash Sprints, and specialized Certification Zone games. These challenges primarily featured conceptual multiple-choice quizzes that tested product definitions, cloud terminology, or GCP history.
For the 2026 Season, Google has made a major structural decision: Trivia, Certification Zones, and Sprints have been officially retired and discontinued.
The rationale behind this change is clear. Google intends to elevate the educational value of the Arcade program. Conceptual quiz completions are being replaced with comprehensive, hands-on console achievements. Google wants students to graduate from the program with real, practical engineering capabilities (like setting up global load balancers, deploying live Kubernetes pods, and training Vertex AI LLMs) rather than just theoretical memorization.
What Happens to Completed Trivia Badges? (Legacy Badges)
Many active students who participated during the early phase of the 2026 season (January through March) earned Sprints or early Trivia badges before the discontinuation went into full effect.
The Preservation Policy: Any retired Trivia, Sprint, or Certification Zone badges that you successfully completed earlier in the season are strictly preserved. In our advanced points calculator, these are classified under Legacy Badges and still count as 1.0 point each toward your prize redemption total.
However, no *new* trivia games or sprints will be released for the remainder of the 2026 season. If you are a new learner starting now, you must focus entirely on active, hands-on badge paths.
How to Earn Points Under the 2026 Rules
With multiple-choice quizzes officially retired, how do you accumulate the points needed for premium swag? Earning is now strictly concentrated on hands-on console exercises. You must focus on the following two categories:
1. Google Cloud Skill Badges
Hands-on learning quests concluded by a final instruct-free Challenge Lab. Earning these proves actual GCP API competence and awards 0.5 points per unique badge.
2. Monthly Arcade Game Tracks
Guided game paths released monthly on the Arcade platform (categorized as Trail, Voyage, and Adventure). Completing a full track awards 1.0 point to your profile.
Our Advice for Students
Do not get discouraged by the retirement of trivia! Earning points through hands-on labs is actually much more rewarding because it builds practical technical credentials you can showcase on your resume or LinkedIn.
To adapt your routine:
- Set aside dedicated study sessions of 30-45 minutes to solve hands-on challenge labs.
- Utilize the free solution walkthrough videos on GCP DECODE and CloudoArc to bypass console errors and quicken your completions.
- Paste your public profile link into our calculator regularly to verify that your points are updating correctly under the new system.
